My Mom has been babysitting her friend's kids off and on (their Dad was home 4 days, they wen to a different friend's for the weekend) for about 2 weeks. They are boys 5 and 12. Yesterday, Mom went to get groceries, so she left the five year old here with me for about an hour. So, I'm just sitting in my room and all of a sudden the fire alarm goes off. What the fuck?! So I start towards my door to see what is going on and I can smell smoke by this time. Sam (the 5-year old) opens my door and is asking where the alarm is so he can fan it with a towel. I go out into the family room and see the door to the fireplace open so I thought he tried to start a fire in there. Then I go further into the family room and see burning paper on the carpet. Oh fuck. I turn around going back into my room wondering who the hell I should call. I didn't want to call 911 for burning paper on the floor, but there isn't much I can do about it myself. Plus, who knows if the rug is going to catch fire right away or what. Luckily, one of my mom's friends had called a bit earlier from across the street, so I called her and she rushed over. I tried calling Mom after that, but she had forgotten her cell phone. Anyway, my Mom's friend poured water on the carpet and kept pouring it on until the carpet didn't feel hot anymore. My Mom arrived home soon after that. Sam was okay if in tears because he didn't want to get in trouble. I was fine except very shaky for a few hours after that. The carpet is ruined.

Man, I just caught the "omg fire" and was wondering if I should call the Saskatoon FD.... glad everyone's ok

Yeah I kind of feel bad about saying "omg, fire" and then leaving for almost half an hour. I actually didn't think there *was* a fire when I said it. I couldn't think exactly why the fire alarm would be going off but in my mind it was candles or insence or something.
