It's Been Almost a Month - August 7, 2006, 3:33 pm
I guess I should just summarize July since it's been so long since I've updated. I think this has been one of if not the busiest summers of my life. I've been shopping twice, out to two movies, to the zoo, to the bar (so far just once but we are planning for more), and just outside reading a great deal. I've also spent too much money but I figure I will make up for that by not doing a hell of alot in the winter. On my last shopping trip (on Tuesday) I bought myself a digital camera. It's a Sony Cybershot, 6 megapixels. This is what it looks like. It came in silver or black and I really liked the black. The guy who sold it to me was really nice too. I've taken quite a few pictures with it already. I've always really enjoyed photography. I've never had my own camera before and of course there are limitations because of being in a wheelchair. It's very light though so I can lift it up without too much trouble.
The zoo was very fun. The zoo here in Saskatoon isn't really much in the way of exotic species. It's more like a conservation and resource type place of animals that live here in Saskatchewan already. This summer they borrowed a tiger from another zoo and I was very excited to see it. I took a bunch of pictures of the animals there (well I had other people do it since they were in a better position to get a good picture being that they were standing). I love all animals so the fact that there isn't a bunch of exotic species doesn't bother me that much. I even got nibbled by a goose. Those guys really know who feeds them.
The two movies I've seen so far this summer (in the theater that is) are Superman and Pirates of the Caribbean. I enjoyed both movies thoroughly. They were both longer than 2 hours but I really didn't feel like that were that long. They were both good fun. I felt that Brandon Routh really captured Clark Kent, with his mannerisms and reminded me alot of Christopher Reeve. Pirates was good fun, funny, action packed and a few scares along the way. Johnny Depp makes a very strange and humorous pirate. The special effects were also fairly impressive.
I was reading outside just about an hour ago and a bird landed on my head. At first I thought it was a large bug because it was so light. Then when it flew away I felt the wings on my cheek (so soft!) and I saw it flying. It was so odd I just sat there for a few minutes. It was also pretty damn cool. I got some pictures of the backyard yesterday too which look pretty good, as well as a couple of bird shots.
Speaking of reading outside, I read a book called Collapse by Jared Diamond. It was an excellent book. It is about how societies choose to collapse or fail. He talks about ancient as well as modern societies and then summarizes by speaking about the problems facing us globally since countries are becoming more and more dependant on one another. He relates alot of the reasons for collapse or fail on managing of resources and in turn the treatment of the environment. He seemed like a very well rounded source of information because he's worked for big business as well as the World Wildlife Fund. In the end it came down to the amount of people and their impact on the environment. Sustainability was basically what he was saying we need to incorporate. It made alot of sense because in the end we do depend on the earth for food, water and air. If we fuck that up then we don't have another planet we can just fall back on. I feel that the environmental movement should not be about saving the planet, because it will go on no matter what we do to it. It's about saving humans and our standard of living. Jared Diamond basically says the same thing. I look forward to reading more of his books.
Still no word on the upping of the enzyme dose. I think I was supposed to find out more this Wednesday but I might not be able to go because I have a bladder infection. They don't allow people to get an infusion when they have any kind of infection. I guess it's just more waiting.
I think that's about all I can think of for now. I really want to keep this updated more often. I always think of something to say when I'm nowhere near the computer and then once I get to it I just don't feel like writing. I suppose I shall have to force myself more often. I'm going to put up a gallery with all the pictures I've taken so far so you can take a gander at them.

I think he meant me because I wasn't writing. Could have been a sexual reference.

It's very good. You get a real sense of what it is like to be on an Arctic expedition (horrible, terribly horrible). The bits with the creature are pretty cool.
